Our Physics discipline has made significant progress in the U.S. News 2024 global discipline ranking

Time:2024-07-09

On June 25, U.S. News released its 2024 World University and Subject Rankings. Our physics discipline ranked 524 and condensed matter physics ranked 23, achieving a historic breakthrough.

Our physics discipline was allowed to award a master's degree in "condensed Matter Physics" in 2003. In 2010 it was allowed to award a first-level master's degree in "Physics", and in 2022 it was allowed to award a second-level doctoral degree in "Low-dimensional Materials Physics". In January 2024, the physics discipline entered the top 1% of ESI globally.

We currently have 54 full-time teachers in the physics discipline, which has national and provincial/ministerial-level teaching and research platforms such as "National Engineering Teaching Base for Physics Basic Courses", "Beijing Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center," and "Beijing Key Laboratory of Environmental Harmful Chemical Substances Analysis." We also have provincial/ministerial-level teaching teams such as the "Ministry of Education Curriculum Ideological and Political Teaching Team" and the "Beijing Excellent Teaching Team".

The physics discipline focuses on major needs in areas such as semiconductor manufacturing, energy, new materials, quantum information and quantum computing, and deeply integrates with our school's superior disciplines of chemical engineering, chemistry and materials science. It has crystallized distinctive secondary discipline directions in condensed matter physics, theoretical physics, optics, and computational physics. Through the promotion of the development of industrial-academic cooperation, the physics discipline has achieved a series of innovative and distinctive achievements in areas such as "the design of new states of matter," "the interaction between wide-spectrum electromagnetic waves and matter," "energy storage and conversion," and "strategic electronic materials and devices." In the past five years, the Physics discipline has hosted over 110 scientific research projects such as the National Natural Science Foundation, the National Key R&D Program, the Beijing Natural Science Foundation, with a total research funding of over 22 million yuan. It has published over 300 research papers in high-quality academic journals such as Nature sub-journals and Physical Review series, achieving outstanding results.

The physics discipline will continue to pay attention to the combination of basic frontier and applied research, strengthen interdisciplinary integration. It will contribute to the construction of the school's "double first-class" program and talent cultivation.
