History of College

The College of Mathematics and Science was developed from the Basic Course Department which was established in 1958. In 1978, the Department of Applied Mathematics and Physics was established, and in 2000, it merged with the Department of Applied Chemistry to form the College of Science. In 2019, the College of Mathematics and Physics was established by the Mathematics and Physics departments of College of Science. The college has an excellent innovative teaching and research team, a comprehensive professional laboratory, and a diverse student training system. It is a base for cultivating high-level basic research and applied basic research mathematical and physical talents that integrate science and engineering.



Disciplinary Introduction

The College of Mathematics and Physics covers three primary disciplines: mathematics, physics, and electronic science and technology. It offers five undergraduate majors: mathematics and applied mathematics, information and computational science, financial mathematics, electronic science and technology, and applied physics. Having a total of three master's programs in first-level discipline including mathematics, physics, and electronic science and technology. In addition, we have two doctoral programs in second-level discipline including operations research and system control and low dimensional material physics. The college has established national engineering basic course physics teaching base, Beijing engineering mathematics teaching base, Beijing popular science base, Beijing physics experimental teaching demonstration center, as well as university-level mathematical modeling innovation base and student electronic innovation base.

Education

The College of Mathematics and Science has a strong faculty and a teaching and research team with good comprehensive quality, high academic level, and pioneering spirit. There are currently 125 faculty members, 10 doctoral supervisors, 20 professors, and 44 associate professors. There are 4 national and provincial-level teaching bases, 3 excellent teaching teams in Beijing, 4 famous teaching teachers in Beijing (including 1 young teaching teacher), 1 famous teacher in ideological and political education courses of the Ministry of Education, and 1 excellent teacher in Beijing. The college has achieved remarkable scientific research and teaching results, winning 1 first prize and 3 second prizes of national education and teaching achievements, and 7 first prizes and 9 second prizes of Beijing education and teaching achievements; 1 national first-class course and 1 national level ideological and political demonstration course; 3 high-quality courses in Beijing, 2 high-quality undergraduate courses in Beijing, 1 ideological and political demonstration course in Beijing, and 3 demonstration courses under the "Tuojin Plan" of the Ministry of Education's online education center; 2 high-quality undergraduate textbooks/courseware in Beijing. Received 1 national level science and technology progress and 1 scientific research invention award, and 6 provincial and ministerial level natural science and technology progress second prizes; In the past three years, we have received over 20 million yuan in research funding, published over 500 academic papers, and granted over 20 patents.

The College of Mathematics and Science takes the National Engineering Basic Course Physics Teaching Base, Beijing Engineering Mathematics Teaching Base, Beijing Physics Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center, Mathematics Modeling Innovation Base, and Electronic Maker Center as carriers, relying on the industry background of the school, to carry out various innovative practical activities with "high order" and "challenge", consolidate students' mathematical and physical foundation, broaden their international perspective, and cultivate their engineering thinking and innovation ability, strengthen the organic connection between the first and second classrooms, highlight the cross integration of science and engineering, concentrate efforts from different disciplines and fields, and focus on exploring major theoretical and practical issues. The college emphasizes the interdisciplinary literacy of students, guides them to participate in various high-level scientific and technological innovation competitions, and cultivates versatile talents with excellent comprehensive qualities; Emphasis should be placed on student research training, encouraging teachers to provide feedback on scientific research achievements in teaching. Through training programs such as the College Student Innovation and Entrepreneurship Program, professor seminars, undergraduate mentorship, and open laboratories, students can improve their knowledge application and problem-solving abilities. The engineering practice works independently developed by undergraduate students in the college, such as drones, robots, intelligent cars, and air monitoring devices, have been widely praised by various sectors of society.


Social Services

The college continues to deepen cooperation between schools and enterprises, transform achievements, and integrate industry and education. It closely cooperates with multiple enterprises such as Shandong Gallium and Qingdao Aluminum Gallium to carry out scientific and technological research, solve technical problems for enterprises, provide intellectual support, and serve local economic and social development. In the past five years, more than 30 patents have been applied for and 14 patents have been authorized. More than 60 people participated in the "Heart Bridge Project" and carried out educational assistance in Inner Mongolia and Sichuan, contributing to rural revitalization. Relying on the National Engineering Physics Basic Course Teaching Base and the Beijing Physics Experimental Demonstration Center, we have established the Beijing Science Popularization Base (Physics) and Changping District Science Popularization Base (Physics) to carry out science popularization activities, receive nearly 1000 primary and secondary school students, promote the spirit of science, and help young people grow and become successful.


International Cooperation and Exchange

The college attaches great importance to the internationalization of education and scientific research, and conducts international academic exchanges and cooperation with multiple universities in countries such as the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, Canada, the Netherlands, South Korea, and Japan. The establishment of a 3+1+1 joint undergraduate and master's program with the University of California, Irvine in the United States, and the 3+1+1 joint undergraduate and master's program with the University of Loughborough in the United Kingdom have created a good situation of open development.
